Yoga

  • Yoga originated in India.
  • Yoga is used for the main purpose of Spiritual-Realization.
  • The word Yoga comes from the root Yuj which means to join.
  • Yoga has been thought to lead to spiritual experience and a higher understanding of a particular existence.

Hindus generally take part in three types of yoga:
-Jnana Yoga: the path of realization and wisdom
-Bhakti Yoga: the path of love and devotion to a personal god
-Karma Yoga: the path of selfless action
There are many other types of yoga yet these are the main three that are practiced.

I think it's interesting that, while Yoga may have started out as a religious practice, it is mainly used as a tpe of excercise these days. While reading this post about the history of Yoga, I noticed that it was nothing like the Yoga of today, since it was meant to focus on spiritual reflection, and not flexibility.

I didn't know at all that Yoga could have started from a religion.

I've tried yoga a couple of times and had no idea it started from a religious practice. It would be fun to see if there are many differences in the way it is used so commonly today.

I had no idea yoga started was so ancient and started from a religion. Good job on including this fact!
